Applied Superconductor have been awarded an allocation of £1.0m of grant funding following round three of the Regional Growth Fund bidding process. The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills are making the relevant announcement today. Our bid centres around three aspects of Applied Superconductor’s development:

Applied Superconductors’ third Fault Current Limiter Project has been successfully commissioned and is now connected to Northern Powergrid’s electrical distribution network in the Scunthorpe area of Yorkshire. The successful connection to the electrical network took place during July 2012. The Fault Current Limiter supplied to Northern Powergrid incorporates an inductive limiter technology developed by Zenergy Power and recently acquired by Applied Superconductor.

Borit NV, based in Geel, Belgium, will be opening its North American office in Cleveland Ohio, on 1st October 2012. The company, Borit Inc., will be headed by Chris Davis who has many years of presenting technology-driven solutions for highly engineered products.

Applied Superconductor's second Fault Current Limiter Project has been successfully commissioned and is now connected to the Scottish Power Manweb electrical distribution network. The connection to the electrical network took place during August 2012. The Fault Current Limiter, which was delivered to site earlier this year, has been installed in a substation directly supplying customers in Liverpool.

Applied Superconductor is pleased to announce the acquisition of Zenergy Power. Zenergy Power was the developer of the inductive limiter technology which has recently been demonstrated in our 11 kV project with Northern Powergrid at a substation in the Scunthorpe area of Yorkshire. The technology will be further demonstrated next year, when a 33kV unit will be installed at a substation in Sheffield.

Calyos has secured an investment of EUR 1.9M from an investor consortium comprising of Theodorus, Sambrinvest, OCAS Ventures, and private investors. Calyos develops heat pipes for use in a wide range of applications where concentrations of heat from electronic devices need to be efficiently dissipated, thereby increasing the reliability and the lifetime of electronic devices.

Business Secretary Visits Hi-Tech North East Technology Company - Set To Save Energy Industry £600 Million Business secretary Dr Vince Cable congratulated a North-East company whose renewable energy device can save the energy industry over £600 million in reduced capital costs and reduce carbon emissions by 37 million tonnes by 2020.

Applied Superconductor, based in Blyth in the North-East of England, has secured funding of more than £3.6 million from a consortium of three investors: Octopus Ventures, OCAS Ventures and IP Group (through the Finance for Business North East Technology Fund). The money will contribute to the company’s development of a device called a ‘superconducting fault current limiter’, which protects electrical networks from the effects of short circuits.

OCAS Ventures completed the first funding round of Borit NV (www.borit.be), a company specialised in innovative sheet metal forming. The investment was realized through Finindus, the investment fund managed by OCAS Ventures. Borit NV supplies customized metal parts requiring accurate forming such as metallic flow plates for fuel cells, electrolyzers and heat exchangers, and lightweight structural panels for construction and transport markets. Borit NV serves customers in applications for fuel cell stacks, consumer electronics, building materials and industrial packaging.
